The Labská Reservoir in the Giant Mountains
An excellent example of how to change the initials FJI to RČ. The Emperor's original initials FJI were as they appear on the medal.
The Labská Reservoir on the Labe under Špindlerův Mlýnemp was built between 1910 and 1916 by the company Redlich and Berger at a cost of 3,500,000 Austrian crowns. Since the waterworks were completed in the middle of the First World War and were to become a symbol of the Austrian monarchy, a huge, concrete double-headed Austrian eagle was placed on the aerial face of the dam just below the crown, and below it a large emblem made of protruding facing stones depicting the initials of the monarch Francis Josef 1. At the beginning of the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, a series of negotiations took place around these two signs with the aim of removing both from the embankment. The eagle was already concreted in 1920, but the monarch's initials remained until 1926, because there was no contractor or a unified opinion on the method of removal. The initials were modified so that from 1926 until today we can read the letters R. Č., meaning the Czechoslovak Republic, on the air side of the dam.
