Catalog sheets of busts of Emperor FJI. and Empress Sisi

 

 

In 1908, Emperor Francis Joseph I celebrated the 60th anniversary of his accession to the Austrian throne. Blanenské železárny seized the opportunity and published a catalog that offered for sale cast iron, zinc and bronze busts and medallions of the former imperial couple. The famous Austrian sculptor of the second half of the 19th century was chosen as the author of the models Viktor Tilgner.

The catalog mentioned above contains a total of two busts of Emperor Francis Joseph I. While on the first bust, the emperor is captured at roughly the age of 18 when he ascends the throne. The second bust was created by Tilgner sometime at the turn of the 80s and 90s of the 18th century, and the emperor's form corresponds to the time of the creation of the work. Similarly, the emperor's medallions are also on it, on one he depicted Francis Joseph I young and on the other in advanced age. Since Empress Elizabeth was prematurely assassinated, we find only one bust and one medallion with her likeness at a young age in the catalog. The emperor's bust alone was 84 cm high, but even with the pedestal the entire work measured 140 cm and weighed 350 kg.
